The TRUE story of R & R (Tipo Tinto & Raspberry)
The Birth of R & R in Mozambique.
We (Alta & Larry Smith) left South Africa and moved to Mozambique in 2003. Alta got work at the now defunct Barra Reef Resort on the Barra peninsula in Inhambane.
In October, after a hard day’s work, Alta joined me
(Larry) and the Barra Reef Divers (Russel & Ruan) in the bar on the
beachfront for some refreshment.
We were drinking “Tipo” and “Coke” as we had no other rum.
Alta not being a drinker preferred to have
a “RED” cool drink.
We all threw our hands in the air and said surely you can have something “stronger”!, upon which we hastily added two fingers of Tipo Tinto to her cool "RED" drink.
After she took a sip, we all wanted to know how it
tasted as we had not had this “MIX” before, she said, uhm OK !.
Her glass then did the rounds and got many nods and Mmmms of approval. There and then we all switched to Tipo and Sparberry and aptly she named it R & R (Rum & Raspberry).
Holidays in Mozambique were never the same after that, everyone was walking (staggering) around with a red mouth, innocently saying that they have not been drinking.
At that time we experienced long periods of difficulty to obtain cool drinks so with the "NEW" drink in high demand, all the Lodge owners made sure to order Sparletta (RED) Sparberry, months before the time thereby ensuring the legacy of R & R.
